The world of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a dramatic one full of horrible creatures, confusing anomalies, and people who are trying to survive both to make a living. Everyone is in The Zone for a reason; some are rather simple, while plenty more are a mystery even to the people themselves.
One faction that has shown up in multiple Stalker games now is The Ward. While they show their faces often in the series, and in The Zone, it can be difficult to get a read on them. So, who are these militaristic people who call such a hostile land home?
Who Is The Ward?
The Ward, also referred to as just Ward, is a militaristic faction that operates in The Zone. They are one of the largest and easily the most well-armed forces in the area, something that has earned them renown and infamy among the other groups.
It is mentioned in the earlier Stalker games that Ward has government funding, which makes sense as they are well-equipped with both personal weapons and body armor and have some of the only working vehicles in the entire Zone.
What Do They Want?
The goal of The Ward is one of the simpler ones. They want to be the ruling force in The Zone and to establish control of it in all forms. They have done this so far by being the armed forces aiding SIRCAA’s scientific endeavors in the area.
The exact details or end-goal of this objective is unknown, as Ward doesn’t share much information with those not in the direct chain of command.
Their control of The Zone so far has been the establishment of bases at key points throughout the area. These are usually at former military locations and at key points across The Zone, notably at checkpoints along the security wall.
They also establish themselves as a pseudo-police force when other factions seem like they are gaining power in The Zone. Often putting themselves in the middle of conflicts with larger stalker groups and against Monolith more notably.
Who Is Their Leader?
Alexander Korshonov is the acting leader of Ward’s actions inside The Zone. He can be seen in-person at key areas and events across the area, something surprising for someone with the rank of Colonel.
It seems that his rank is actually that of, or equal to, that of an acting military Colonel. Something that shows more hints at Ward being an offshoot of the government’s military. This is surprising considering Ward also does pull many of its forces from mercenary groups.
Where Are They Based?
The Ward has a base in the former Chemical Plant, located towards the center of the map in the larger section of the map under the same name.
This is the small peninsula-shaped section of the map just to the West of the Lesser Zone, where you begin Stalker 2.
They also create operating stations in places where they are either conducting investigations or trying to quell violence, usually resulting in a martial law-type situation.
How Do They React To Other Factions?
Ward’s reaction to other factions is usually less than pleasant, something that makes sense given many of their ideals revolve around an iron-fisted authority. They are openly hostile to most Monolithians due to their fringe values, peculiar tendencies, and connection to The Zone’s powers.
Other factions aren’t immune to The Ward’s anger, but they often wait until provoked to attack other factions or solo stalkers.
However, they aren’t above using other groups as tools in their own endeavors. Most notably, this occurred in Operation Zenith and Operation Fairway, in which Ward called on solo stalkers and factions like Freedom and Noon to aid them with militaristic force.
