Learn how to get rid of pets in Stardew Valley!
The 1.6 update of Stardew Valley allows you to adopt many different kinds of pets on your farm, which require specific items and daily care to raise. With 13 different pets available, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the amount you have living on your farm, or you just picked the wrong breed to add to your family.
Luckily, there is a way to remove pets from your farm and family, so long as you have access to a specific area of the map. If you are interested in how you can remove your pets, then check out the tips below.
How To Get Butterfly Powder
Butterfly Powder is a purchasable item from Krobus that allows you to remove dogs, cats, and turtles from your farm. Each Butterfly Powder can only removeone pet at a time, and will be consumed upon use.
Since Krobus and his shop are located in the sewers, you will need to donate 60 items to the museum and receive the Rusty Key from Gunther to enter this area. Luckily, while Krobus does have a rotating shop, Butterfly Powder is always available and costs 20,000g.
How To Remove A Pet
Once you have acquired Butterfly Powder, the process of removing a pet is relatively simple. Just walk up to the pet you want to remove and interact with it while holding the Butterfly Powder, which will bring up a menu asking you if you want to remove the pet from your farm.
Once you have removed a pet from your farm, there is no way to add them back. Be careful when you are holding Butterfly Powder, so you don't accidentally get rid of a pet you want to keep!
When a pet is removed, their pet bowl will become unassigned, so you can always adopt a different pet and reuse this bowl. Furthermore, if the pet was wearing a hat when they were removed, then that hat can be picked up from the ground.
