Terraria Has Officially Outsold The Original Super Mario Bros. By Nearly A Million Copies

Terraria developer Re-Logic has confirmed that the game's sales have now officially passed 58 million copies, meaning that it's finally outsold the original Super Mario Bros. for NES.

Although it doesn't receive quite as much mainstream attention as Minecraft, Terraria still stands as one of the most popular and successful survival crafting games out there. Sure, it can't ever seem to decide if it's on its last update or not, but that hasn't stopped it from being a quiet juggernaut since it released in 2011.

While Terraria has been a big seller for about as long as it's been around, Re-Logic hasn't told us just how well it was doing for a little while now. The last update we had regarding the game's sales numbers was back in 2022, when it was announced that it had sold around 44 million copies. Well, it's only been two years, but it's now far exceeded that number.

Terraria Has Now Sold More Than The Original Super Mario Bros.

Terraria Has Officially Outsold The Original Super Mario Bros. By Nearly A Million Copies0

As reported by GamesRadar+, Re-Logic shared a "State of the Game" post for Terraria in late June that highlighted some of the things that had been changed about the game recently. Before announcing some more traditional news about the game, Re-Logic revealed that Terraria has now officially hit 58.7 million copies sold, a number that has likely gone up since the post was made.

Re-Logic also revealed why it's been so long since we heard about how Terraria was doing sales-wise, as the team was purposefully waiting until it hit that milestone. The reason? Because that number means that Terraria has now officially sold more copies than Super Mario Bros. on the NES.

"It has been quite some time since we gave an update on just how massive the Terraria fanbase has grown. This was somewhat by design, as we had our sights set on doing so once we passed a somewhat-obscure game about a plumber and his brother trying to save a princess from this dragon-turtle thing…"

Re-Logic says that it's "beyond humbled and thankful" for the support of fans, and that 32 million of those sales come from PC alone, which is clearly the best place to play Terraria. It also teased that something cool might happen when the game eventually reaches 60 million copies sold, although it's not clear what that might be.

Although this is undoubtedly a massive achievement on Re-Logic's part, it's worth noting that it's possible that Super Mario Bros. has sold more copies since that figure was reported, although 58 million is the last time we heard about the figures. Either way, it's clear that Terraria is at least on-pace with the NES classic and is likely even a bit ahead of it by now.
