As HBO promises book accuracy, Harry Potter reboot reignites controversy over Snape’s casting. Plus, Dominic McLaughlin shares new updates on Season 1.

Way ahead of the release of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, studio executives are already selling it as a major improvement over the billion-dollar film franchise. Speaking on a panel at Content London, HBO Max’s head of original content, Sarah Aubrey, said the show will finally feel like the books fans grew up reading (via Variety).
I just keep thinking, it’s such a delightful adaptation of the books. And I think when people watch it, they [will] think, ‘These are the books’. It’s created by a British writer, it’s directed by a British filmmaker and its craftspeople are the best that this country has to offer. I’m so excited for everyone to see it.
Aubrey revealed that the HBO adaptation stays so close to J.K. Rowling’s writing that viewers will immediately think, “these are the books”. The series is currently being filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and is aiming for a 2027 release, with each season covering one full book.
HBO believes this slower, more detailed approach will allow J.K. Rowling’s story, world-building, and characters to shine in ways the eight Harry Potter films couldn’t fit into two hours.
Potterheads Still Pissed at Snape’s Casting Despite HBO Assurance

Now, even though HBO Max’s Sarah Aubrey is promoting the Harry Potter reboot as the “most faithful book adaptation ever”, many fans still aren’t buying it. And the biggest reason is the same old argument that refuses to die: the casting of Paapa Essiedu as the new Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series.
While Aubrey insists the show will finally feel like the books, Potterheads believe the major casting decision of Essiedu has already broken that promise. Meanwhile, there’s no denying that Alan Rickman’s original portrayal of Snape is widely considered untouchable. His voice, mannerisms, and emotional depth made the character iconic, and now, fans feel no one can recreate that magic.

That’s part of the reason why HBO deliberately cast Black actor Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. Because only by race-swapping the character could they avoid direct comparisons with Rickman. But then, instead of calming fans, this choice created an even bigger issue, with many fans now questioning whether changing Snape’s race aligns with the studio’s claim of “accuracy”.

So, following Sarah Aubrey’s comments, fans are now openly calling out the contradiction. Taking to X, people are asking if HBO is aiming for a page-perfect adaptation, why change one of the most visually defined characters in the series?
Dominic McLaughlin Teases Major Progress on Harry Potter Season 1

Amid all the chaos, Harry Potter reboot star Dominic McLaughlin who has taken the role of young Harry has shared a hopeful new update on how Season 1 is coming together. During an appearance on Saturday Mash-Up! Live, the young actor revealed that filming has been “going amazing” and he has already built strong friendships with his castmates.
[It’s] going amazing. It’s going really well. I’ve made good friends with everyone, it’s great to be there.
Meanwhile, Daniel Radcliffe, who previously brought the OG Harry Potter to life in the films, has already reached out to support McLaughlin. During his appearance on Good Morning America, Radcliffe revealed he wrote the young actor a heartfelt letter wishing him an even better experience than he had back in the early 2000s.
I wrote to Dominic and I sent him a letter, and he sent me a very sweet note back. I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did — I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time.’ And I do, I just see these pictures of him and the other kids and I just want to hug them. They just seem so young.
Following Radcliffe’s comment, McLaughlin also shared his side of the moment, calling the letter “insane” in the best way possible. He recalled sitting on a train when his father quietly handed him the envelope. Only after reaching the signature, “Dan R” did he realize who it was from. McLaughlin said he was “going mad” inside but had to stay calm in public.
