A group of modders has created one of the smallest working console builds ever, shrinking a Nintendo Wii down to a device small enough to hang on a keychain.
The project, known as the Kawaii GC, isn’t powered by emulation or Raspberry Pi hardware. Instead, it runs on real Nintendo internals, using a heavily modified Nintendo Wii motherboard to play GameCube titles.
Despite measuring just 60mm by 60mm and being under 16mm thick, the system is fully functional and capable of running games like Mario Kart and Crazy Taxi.
@YveltalGriffin and I have been cooking up something special over the past year or so and we are now happy to show it off.

How the Kawaii GC works
The build is the result of collaboration between modders Yeetle, Wesk, and Ding, with the project showcased by Macho Nacho Productions.
To achieve its size, the team used an “Omega trim,” the most extreme way to cut down a Wii motherboard while keeping it operational. Key components like the AV chip and NAND memory are relocated using custom flex cables to stack everything into a tighter layout.
A custom power mod called Thundervolt allows the system to run efficiently on just 5V, reducing heat and power draw enough to make the design viable at this scale.
The console itself docks into a separate base that handles power, controller inputs, and video output. The dock includes four GameCube controller ports and connects via USB-C, while audio and video are routed through breakout cables.
While the system runs smoothly and supports real GameCube gameplay, the ultra-compact design comes with limitations.
Cooling is handled passively through the aluminum shell, which doubles as a heat sink. However, the device can overheat during extended play sessions and may require external airflow to stay stable.

Accessing the microSD card used for storing games also requires opening the case, as there is no external slot. Wireless controller support was inconsistent during testing, though wired controllers worked without issue.
Even with those drawbacks, the Kawaii GC stands out as a technical showcase. It highlights how far console modding has come, packing full GameCube functionality into something closer to a piece of jewelry than a traditional system.
