Even though Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 has made some massive and controversial changes to THPS4’s career mode, it’s managed to keep most of the objectives by turning them into Pro Goals.

Considering how beloved Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 was and how dire things looked for the series in recent years, the reveal of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 should have been nothing but good news. While it’s great to see THPS back in action, that wasn’t quite true thanks to all of the questions surrounding career mode.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4’s career mode is so iconic that fans instantly got worried that it wouldn’t make the cut in 3+4, which sort of turned out to be true. It’s been confirmed for a while now (despite some confusing messaging) that career mode is no more, but that isn’t quite the bleak outcome that you might think it is.

When it was confirmed that Pro Skater 3+4 has changed THPS4’s career mode into a more traditional experience with a two-minute timer, one of the main worries was what would happen to all of the more in-depth challenges and missions. As pointed out by Push Square and originally reported by VGC, it seems that Iron Galaxy has found a good middle ground for it all.

As part of a recent hands-on session that VGC had with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, Iron Galaxy told the team that many of the goals that are missing from the first playthrough of a level will now be included as part of the «Pro Goals» system. Pro Goals unlock once you’ve completed the first 10 missions (essentially making it new game plus), and they’ll feature some of the more difficult objectives.

Combine this with the ability to adjust the timer and you’ve basically got the ingredients for your own career mode in THPS 3+4.

While no examples were given of what we can expect to see from Pro Goals, Iron Galaxy did confirm that the minigame-esque ones, such as playing tennis, won’t be a part of the package at all. That seems like a pretty small price to pay for a bigger focus on actual skating objectives, and ensures that THPS4 hasn’t been totally gutted.
