The inductees for the Television Academy’s 27th Hall of Fame have officially been announced. In the past 40 years, the Hall of Fame has recognized over 150 honorees, from actors, directors, and producers to hosts, comedians, journalists, musicians, tradesmen, and more, for their extraordinary work in the TV industry. This year’s chosen few will be inducted into the hallowed Hall of Fame during the Televerse Festival on August 16.
The six new honorees are Viola Davis, Conan O’Brien, Ryan Murphy, Henry Winkler, Mike Post, and Don Mischer. The latter is being honored posthumously for his work as a live-event producer, having sadly passed away at age 85 in April. Mike Post is a legendary TV composer, credited with scoring well over 1000 episodes in the Law & Order franchise. Murphy has created and written some of the biggest TV dramas of the 20th century, while Davis, O’Brien, and Winkler are legends in front of the camera. All six honorees have won Emmy Awards.
A Brief History Of The TV Hall Of Fame
Who Has Been Inducted Before?
Created by the former president of the Television Academy, John H. Mitchell, in 1984, the Hall of Fame is meant to honor «persons who have made outstanding contributions in the arts, sciences or management of television, based upon either cumulative contributions and achievements or a singular contribution or achievement.» (via Television Academy). Though most honorees are individuals, the Academy has made exceptions for iconic duos, shows, and even entire casts, such as the Smother Brothers, I Love Lucy, and the full original cast of Saturday Night Live; Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, John Belushi, and Laraine Newman.
Other honorees include actress and comedian Lucille Ball, TV host Ed Sullivan, legendary dancer Fred Astaire, the one and only Oprah Winfrey, national treasures like Dick Van Dyke and Betty White, journalist and news anchor Katie Couric, and iconic TV producer and creator Shonda Rhimes. Being inducted into the TV Hall of Fame is certainly an honor. It’s not an annual tradition; only a handful of names are chosen each time.
Our Take On This Year's TV Hall Of Fame Inductees
One Name Is A Surprising Addition, Though Not For The Reason You Think
All six honorees have undoubtedly earned their place in the TV Hall of Fame. Viola Davis is one of the most talented and hard-working actors today; she’s an EGOT winner and the first Black actress to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead in a Drama Series for How to Get Away With Murder. Conan O’Brien is one of the nation’s most beloved late-night hosts. While some of Murphy’s recent work, like the true crime drama Monsters, has been met with controversy, he also created or co-created massive shows like Glee, American Horror Story, and Pose.

Similarly, Mischer’s work as a live-event producer, which includes Super Bowl Halftime Shows, Democratic National Conventions, and the Olympics, has shaped the national television landscape, and Post is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished TV composers of all time. The only surprise addition to this list is, perhaps, Henry Winkler, but only because the actor, who has had roles in dozens of sitcoms, including the iconic Happy Days, has been a part of Hollywood history for over five decades. It feels as though he should have been inducted into the TV Hall of Fame years ago.
