A tiny tortoiseshell kitten is going viral after veterinarians revealed she had to be “deflated” due to a rare medical condition that caused her body to fill with air.

The stray kitten, named Zoe, arrived at a veterinary shelter looking unusually swollen, with her entire body appearing puffed up like a balloon. Her case quickly caught the attention of veterinarian Dr. Phil Caldwell, who shared the unusual situation with viewers on Instagram.

In a video posted to his account, Caldwell explained that X-rays showed the kitten was suffering from subcutaneous emphysema, a condition where air becomes trapped beneath the skin.

When Zoe first arrived, her appearance immediately stood out.

“This stray kitten came into the shelter yesterday… and I have to figure out how to fix it,” Caldwell said in the clip while gently examining her. Pressing lightly on her sides showed just how much air had built up under her skin, causing her tiny body to look inflated.

“This is the craziest veterinary case I’ve seen in quite some time,” he said. “She’s so sweet… yet she’s filled with air. She’s blown up like a blimp. Oh my gosh, she’s like a big puffball. We’ll do our best to save her.”

Viewers quickly flooded the comments with messages hoping Zoe would recover.

“Oh my gosh, what can we do besides pray?” one person wrote. “Sweet angel is in the best care.”

“Please do everything in your power to make sure this little one lives a long, full life… possibly with me,” replied another.

In a follow-up update, Caldwell said Zoe’s condition has already improved.

“Zoe update! Everyone’s favorite puff kitty is making progress and looking much better, though she’s not out of the woods yet,” the caption read.

Subcutaneous emphysema occurs when air becomes trapped in the soft tissues under the skin. In animals, this can happen due to trauma, infections, or injuries that allow air to enter beneath the skin.

The trapped air spreads through tissue layers, making the body appear swollen or inflated. Veterinarians can often feel a crackling sensation under the skin when pressing on the affected areas.

Treatment typically focuses on stabilizing the animal and addressing the underlying cause while allowing the air to gradually dissipate.

In Zoe’s latest update, the kitten already appears noticeably less puffy as the veterinary team continues monitoring her condition. According to Caldwell, she is eating and improving as the trapped air slowly disappears while her body heals.

This isn’t the first cat go to viral in 2026 thanks to a wild health issue. One back in February had giant eyes due to a rare condition, and another had four ears.
