Virginia Father Says Store Wrongly Accused His 14-Year-Old Daughter of Shoplifting: ‘Absolutely Outrageous’

Dad wasn’t having it

A shopping trip at a Virginia mall turned into a stressful experience for a father and his 14-year-old daughter after they were accused of shoplifting at a clothing store, despite the father saying the jeans had been purchased from another retailer just moments earlier.

The incident was shared on X by @theMakarioz, along with a nearly 10-minute video recorded at Potomac Mills mall in Woodbridge, Virginia. The footage shows several police officers speaking with the family inside a True Religion store after the store manager reportedly suspected the teen had stolen a pair of jeans.

Prince William County Police confirmed to WUSA9 that they responded to a shoplifting call, but that no criminal action was taken.

In the video, the father strongly denies the accusation and insists his daughter did nothing wrong. Pointing to the receipt from another store, he says, “My daughter is like 14 years old. She didn’t steal no damn jeans,” before adding, “We literally just walked from over there.”

He argues that the misunderstanding could have been resolved without involving law enforcement. “They could’ve asked me… ‘Can you just show us that you bought this from somewhere else?’ It’s just that easy,” he says. He also tells those present, “I did 20 years in the military, and she don’t steal,” while defending his daughter’s character.

Throughout the incident in Virginia, the father repeatedly asks for the store’s corporate contact information, saying he intends to file a complaint. He says the experience left his daughter upset, telling staff, “My daughter over here having a bad day because of y’all.”

Toward the end of the encounter, an officer appears to work toward a resolution by suggesting the family contact the company’s HR department and regional manager through email. The officer also relays the father’s request that the 14-year-old receive an apology in addition to the one he was reportedly offered.

Internet Reacts to Virginia Father’s Confrontation

The video drew largely sympathetic reaction online, with most commenters rallying behind the man and his daughter, while a handful offered more complicated takes.

One commenter expressed outrage at everyone in the room: “I hope they successfully sue them. Absolutely outrageous. And to all the *expletive* standing around there including the employees, how about a *expletive* APOLOGY??!!” Another made a similar point about the lasting emotional impact: “Just imagine if he was not with her….u can’t let ur kid go nowhere without you.”

A third pushed back on the store with a call for legal consequences: “Omggg I would clean them out in the courts. They were no mix up. Oh please.” Someone else echoed the demand for accountability: “People who make false reports needs to be in jail.”

Not everyone was focused solely on this family. One commenter offered broader context from personal experience: “Honestly there are so many people that steal from these high end jeans stores; my aunt worked there and she says that it’s so bad they had to move out of the mall.”

True Religion has not issued a public statement at the time of writing.
