The team behind the upcoming The Cat in the Hat film defends the decision to shelve Coyote vs. Acme.

Per Deadline, The Cat in the Hat co-writer-director Alessandro Carloni opened up about why the axing of Coyote vs. Acme by Warner Bros. Discovery should not become «representative of how painful and atrocious the industry can be.» Carloni explained, «It’s that kind of industry. You have to go with the frustration. We are lucky to do art in our profession but we can’t lock ourselves in a basement and paint a painting. We get to do things that are huge and expensive and it is a business.»

Erica Rivinoja, who wrote and directed The Cat in the Hat alongside Carloni, added that audiences can help prevent future cancellations in one simple way. «Go to the movies,» Rivinoja said. «Go to the big ones, go to the small ones, don’t just stream them.» When the subject of generative artificial intelligence in the arts came up, Rivinoja was adamant that there was no concern about such technology ever «coming up with our big ideas. We want to support our artists and support our humans.»

Directed by Dave Green from a screenplay by Samy Burch, which itself was based on a story by Burch, Jeremy Slater, and James Gunn, Coyote vs. Acme is a legal dramedy set in a world where the animated characters of the Looney Tunes franchise exist right alongside the rest of humanity. The film stars Will Forte as Kevin Avery, a floundering attorney who takes on a new client in the form of Wile E. Coyote, who is suing the Acme Corporation for the constant backfiring of their many destructive devices, all of which have failed to help the cartoon plaintiff catch the infamous Road Runner and left the Coyote himself in bruised, battered, broken, and burnt to a crisp. The film also stars John Cena as Acme Corporation attorney Buddy Crane and Lana Condor as Kevin’s niece, Paige Avery.

What Happened to Coyote vs. Acme — And Who Owns It Now?

Back in Nov. 2023, Coyote vs. Acme was officially canceled by Warner Bros. Pictures. This move was widely derided by fans and industry insiders, yet it seemed as if there was nothing that could be done to salvage the film from being relegated to the realm of obscurity in its entirety. Thankfully for fans, Ketchup Entertainment, who previously served as distributor of The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, stepped up and secured the rights to the film earlier this year for a sum of around $50 million. As of the time of writing, Coyote vs. Acme does not have a planned release date, although it has been confirmed that Ketchup Entertainment is actively showcasing the feature for potential international distributors and buyers.
