The opening sequence of Dune: Part Three just screened to select journalists and fans, and it plays like an intense war movie featuring men on a disastrous mission.
We’re just a few months from the Dune trilogy drawing to a close, with Part Three hitting screens worldwide on December 18, 2026.
To start building hype for the movie, a fan event was held at locations all over the world, where director Denis Villeneuve and star Timothée Chalamet teased what to expect from the new movie.
A fresh Dune: Part Three trailer was screened, which has since dropped online and can be viewed below. While the global audience was also treated to the film’s opening sequence, which played like gangbusters.

To set the clip up, Villeneuve said: “Silence to me is so powerful. I actually have some footage to show you today that speaks to this. This is one of the early scenes from the film. Both visions from the first two movies have now become reality, and we see the consequences of his [Paul Atreidis’] decisions… I would not consider what you are going to see to be a silent film, but there’s not a lot of dialogue.”
The footage then starts with spacecrafts dropping from the sky, and passing through a huge storm, where lightning blows one ship up.
We see inside such drone, where there’s soldiers holding weapons, and nervously reading books or holding objects for comfort. One of them then claims “water will fall from the sky.”
A familiar face appears in the shape of Javier Bardem’s Stilgar, who says “God be with us,” while others chant and shout “Ready?” and in response “Ready!”

The crafts halt at their planetary destination, witness rain falling, and head out onto the dunes carrying canisters. They march forth, but Stilgar then orders them to “stop,” and “get down,” as lasers are fired from guns that emerge from the ground, before a huge weapon also rises from the surface.
The rain amazes one man, who calls it “a miracle,” while the soldiers run, duck, and take cover under their own ships as the giant weapon detonates, causing an energy beam that’s akin to a mini-nuclear explosion.
Stilgar demands three “shield piercers” to try and take out their opponent’s defences, but it only results in the battalion being shot to smithereens.
Finally, we track one soldier who speedily retreats, desperately trying to avoid the laser fire, before being hit, and pretty much exploding.
New Dune footage will screen before The Odyssey

As the title of this article suggests, the opening sequence is like watching the start of Saving Private Ryan play out on an alien planet, due to the tense landing, the flying bullets, the panic that sets in, and the bloodbath that ensues.
And you’ll be able to watch the carnage very soon, as while presenting the footage, Villeneuve revealed: “This was shot on 70mm IMAX film, and audiences will be able to see a glimpse of this scene ahead of The Odyssey showings in 70mm IMAX.”
That will happen when The Odyssey hits screens next week, on July 17, 2026, while Dune: Part Three is out on December 18, 2026.
