How to get the Shovel in Blue Prince

What does the Shovel do in Blue Prince?

One of the most reliable ways to get the Shovel in Blue Prince is by drafting the Commissary. Once you unlock this room in your run, it’ll offer up to four random items for sale, that you can buy using the gold you’ve collected during exploration.

The Shovel costs six coins when it appears in the Commissary. New players may struggle to get that much together, but if you’ve been looting the right rooms—like the Pantry and the Storeroom—you should have more than enough by the time you find the Commissary.

And here’s a tip: if you stumble upon the Metal Detector (which also sometimes pops up in the Commissary or Courtyard), grab it! It helps you locate hidden coins and boosts your chances of affording the gear you need.

Blue Prince might be unpredictable, but dead-end rooms often reward your curiosity. These out-of-the-way spaces tend to have a higher chance of spawning useful items like tools. If you’re stuck without a clue, check the following spots:

  • Attic
  • Closet
  • Walk-In Closet
  • Storeroom

Green-type rooms (such as the Courtyard, Greenhouse, and the Patio) also have a solid chance of rewarding your exploration. Look for the shovel leaning against the walls. You’ll need to have access to the Green-type rooms after you get your Shovel, otherwise, there’s little point in going to all this trouble. Be sure to draft them when you can.

Remember to explore the grounds. Drafting outdoor rooms is another great way to expand your tool-hunting ground, so you should try to unlock the West Gate and the Garage Door as soon as possible. When you’ve done this, you should be able to draft the Toolshed and the Hovel, which could also be hiding the Shovel from you.

Ordering the Shovel

If you manage to find the Security Room and crack the Terminal Password, you’ll gain access to the mansion’s computer system. Using this terminal, you can place an order for the Shovel, which will then be delivered to the Commissary.

This method is perfect for players who like to plan ahead because the Shovel doesn’t arrive on the same day you order it. If you’ve already explored the house and unlocked key locations, placing an early order can set you up nicely for later runs.

What to do with the Shovel in Blue Prince

Now that you have the Shovel, you can use it to dig up mounds of dirt in grassy rooms like the Courtyard and Patio. Each dirt patch you unearth has the chance to contain:

  • Coins
  • Food items (for added steps)
  • Other resources
  • Quirky (useless) stuff like an old shoe

You’ll usually find two or three mounds in any grass-filled area. While not every dig guarantees a reward, the potential loot makes it worth your time.

Use the Coat Check Room

As your run starts coming to a close, try to draft the Coat Check Room before you end the day. This room lets you stash and retrieve one item during your next run, saving you from the headache of re-tracking it down from scratch.
