Which free standard S-class character you should pick in Neverness to Everness?

You can claim a free S-class character in Neverness to Everness shortly after starting the game. Like Zenless Zone Zero and other, similar gacha games, Neverness to Everness gives you your freebie once you hit a specific number of pulls on the standard banner, but unlike its peers, NtE’s threshold is quite low. You can claim your free character after you reach 50 pulls on the standard banner, which you’ll be able to do after completing the tutorial and first few missions.

Which one to pick is another matter, though. As of NtE’s launch, all the standard banner characters have value and are strong. However, a few stand out as most likely to be future proof — and as having more utility for a broader variety of teams.

Below, we break down which free standard S-class (5-star) character to pick in Neverness to Everness’ standard banner.

We’ll start with the ones you probably won’t get as much use of except in niche situations.

  • Jiuyan
  • Fadia

Jiuyuan needs Blossom teams to function effectively, which limits her usefulness, while Fadia’s low-health gimmick makes it more challenging to maintain your team health without getting much value in return. These two are fine, but not worth your free pick.

The next set are a bit more situational.

  • Hathor
  • Baicang
  • Daffodil

Hathor is a strong burst DPS unit, but her burst happens during her ultimate. When she’s not in that state, her damage output and overall contribution tends to suffer. Burst units are usually more future-proof than standard damage dealers, though the downside is that most of her team potential revolves around characters who can either buff her or pick up the slack when she’s off-burst.

Baicang is excellent. He just has a higher learning curve. If Wuthering Waves and ZZZ are anything to go by, though, expert characters like him tend to stay relevant for a very long time.

Daffodil is a curious one who seems like she may become more valuable in the future. She’s the only Chaos-aligned character at launch (and for the next version), and her ideal team is built for break damage. That’s not a common theme among most NtE characters yet, so presumably, it’s something we’ll see more of in the future.

If you just want the easiest choice with practically no downsides, though, that’d be Sakiri. Sakiri works brilliantly in Scorch teams, but her ultimate provides utility for any party type. Support characters rarely suffer from powercreep like damage dealers too, so you can probably bet Sakiri will remain relevant for at least most of Neverness to Everness’ 1.x patches.
