Which is the best Evomon starter?

Here's everything you need to know about Evomon's starters.

It’s crystal clear exactly what Evomon’s trying to emulate from the moment you boot it up. After meeting a blocky professor, he offers you three legally distinct pocket monsters that you’ll have to pick from: Leafbu, Blazpu and Bubble. If you’ve ever played a Pokemon game, you’ll know this is an important decision. Arguably the hardest an eight-year-old child ever has to make. If you want some support on your choice, below, we’ve detailed our thoughts on what the best Evomon starter is, and which one will prepare you best for the early game.

Evomon Starters ranked

Below, we’ll rank all three Evomon starters from our top recommendation to our bottom, but bear in mind, this is just our opinion. Honestly, all three are relatively useful, so there’s no wrong answer here.

1. Leafbu

For our money, the top dog of the starter pile is my boy, Leafbu. I’ll be preaching to the choir here if you’re a Pokemon fan, but types are everything in a monster battling game, and so your choice of starter can make the early game much easier or harder depending on whether you pick a starter that’s strong against the types of Evomon you’ll square off against in the early hours.

Considering Leafbu is a Grass-type, he can absolutely steamroll through the first two worlds you’ll conquer on your journey, as Verdant Valley is centred around Rock-type Evomon (with a Rock-type boss fight) and Petal Pond is centred around Water-type Evomon (with a Water-type boss fight). Both these elements are weak to Grass, meaning Leafbu will be absolutely cleaning house once he unlocks Leaf Blade. By the time you reach the Fire-type world, Lava Crag, you’ll also have been able to catch a Water-type Evomon in Petal Pond, Clampip, meaning Leafbu’s Fire weakness shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

2. Bubble

In second place, we have Bubble. I gotta be honest, this guy’s ugly as hell, but damnit, he gets results! Considering Rock-types will be your first major hurdle, he’ll chug through them all quickly, as Water is strong against Rock, and by the time you reach Petal Pond, you’ll be able to rely on his resistance against Water to act as a tank, using Ram to hit hard while absorbing Water-based attacks. He’ll then come in handy again when you reach Lava Crags and face off against more Fire-types.

He falls below Leafbu considering he’s not gonna be dealing serious damage in Petal Pond, and by the time you get to Lava Crags, you may well have levelled up a Clampip to be your Water main. But as a man who has a heavy bias for Water-types after spending so many of my childhood years chillin’ with Squirtle, I get being all in on an aquatic starter.

3. Blazpu

Finally, we have Blazpu. There are truly no bad options among the starters, but Blazpu really isn’t going to be much use to you until a little later in the game. In Verdant Valley, you’ll be able to use his Fire abilities to quickly take down the Budlings roaming the area, but the Rock-type boss at the end of the zone will wipe the floor with him. Then, once you reach Petal Pond, Blazpu’s essentially useless, considering you’ll mostly be battling Water-types.

It’s not until you get to Amber Acres (World 4) that Blazpu’s Fire skills will be useful as a counter, and by then, you’ve already traversed through Lava Crags, where you’ll find Fire-types you can recruit. Blazpu still has his uses, though, and if you’re levelling your Evomon up, it will prevent you from needing to recruit and train a Fire-type in Lava Crags for your Grass-based encounters in Amber Acres.

If you want to know when it’s best to use your Evomon (or to keep it out of the fight), these are the strengths and weaknesses of each one. Make sure you put them in match-ups with Evomon types they’re strong against, and recall them when against those wielding their elemental weaknesses.
