Who is Alexis Stone? Makeup artist claims to be Jim Carrey imposter after “clone” theory

Jim Carrey made a rare public appearance at the 51st César Awards in Paris last week, delivering an emotional speech. But it was his appearance that set the internet off, fuelling clone conspiracy theories – and now make-up artist Alexis Stone has weighed in.

The clone conspiracy – suggesting that celebrities have died and been replaced by imposters to maintain profit – has been going for years. Avril Lavigne, Eminem, and Beyoncé are just a few famous figures who have been the subject of wild rumors, despite there being no basis in fact.

It’s typically triggered by nothing more than perceived changes in appearance, which is why Carrey has become the latest target. The Truman Show actor received this year’s honorary award at this year’s César event, making a public appearance after retiring from acting.

Talk quickly turned to rumors suggesting that the comedian’s face, voice, and even eye color had changed, with some netizens accusing the celebrity of being an imposter. By now, you’re no doubt wondering: what does Alexis Stone have to do with all this?

Who is Alexis Stone?

Alexis Stone is the drag queen alias of British makeup artist Elliot Joseph Rentz, best known for using prosthetics and makeup to transform into celebrities (with uncanny accuracy). Stone has claimed they transformed into Carrey for the event, a stunt that’s sparked a divided response.

In his latest Instagram post on the Alexis account, Rentz shared a now-viral image of Carrey on the César Awards red carpet, alongside the caption, “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris.”

Another photo shows a mask, fake teeth, and makeup in a Paris hotel room. Rentz also shared an Instagram Story of him in the French capital, which features the same photos as the post, as well as what looks like a cast of the Ace Ventura star’s head.

Now, this is very much in the artist’s wheelhouse, as he’s built a reputation on convincingly transforming into actors, characters, and public figures.

But given Carrey delivered a live speech at the ceremony and was photographed throughout the evening, there’s no evidence to suggest he wasn’t actually present.

It appears Rentz may simply be leaning into the viral conspiracy for fun, but even so, it’s left some fans confused. As one wrote in the comments section of his post, “I can’t handle any more stress right now, I need to know if this is real.”

“I need the real Jim Carrey to confirm,” said another, while a third added, “Nah, we need more proof. Show us some video footage of the process.”

Some have fully fallen for the post, including this person who simply wrote, “Wow.” Another commented, “In the world of AI you’re keeping it SFX and I respect that.”

However, many have seen through the stunt, with one alleging that the mask picture is “AI generated.”

Another said, “This is good content! However, from an anatomical perspective, the level of dynamic movement seen with Jim’s face is not consistent with applied prosthetics. They do not integrate into fat and muscle planes in that way.”

Jim Carrey fans defend actor amid clone conspiracy theory

Even though it’s not confirmed, it’s led to widespread speculation on TikTok, where videos continue to breakdown Carrey’s perceived difference in appearance, including his alleged eye change color from brown to blue.

While some claim it’s Alexis Stone, others say it’s not true, and some believe Carrey has had surgical work done. Amid the ongoing rumors, the actor’s fans have jumped in to defend him.

An example came from the Robin Williams Instagram account created in the late actor’s memory. Sharing a throwback photo of Carrey and Williams together, they wrote, “Please stop believing and spreading malicious and stupid rumors that Jim Carrey was replaced.

“It’s idiotic conspiracy nonsense that falls apart the moment you use your brain. Instead, celebrate a great actor and the high recognition of his legacy around the world.”

Another commented, “Am I the only one who thinks this is just Jim Carrey looking older than when he was young? He’s 64. People’s appearance changes, and with plastic surgery even more.”
