Why is MindsEye getting mostly negative reviews on Steam?

MindsEye is being flooded with negative reviews on Steam, and it’s not just because players expect too much. This new action-adventure title, released on June 10, 2025, by Build a Rocket Boy, was closely followed mainly because it marks the return of Leslie Benzies, a major figure behind the success of the GTA series. But what should’ve been a solid launch is now being seen as a missed opportunity.

The game’s reviews on Steam currently sit in the Negative range, with over 750 total user reviews (458 negative, 341 positive) at the time of writing. Let’s find out why.

Note: This article reflects the writer’s personal experience – your gameplay may differ, and the issues mentioned here may not occur for everyone. These are just a few that were encountered and addressed.

A few reasons why MindsEye is receiving mostly negative reviews on Steam

Why is MindsEye getting mostly negative reviews on Steam?

Poor performance on PC

The first red flag players noticed was the game’s performance on PC. Even powerful, high-end setups are struggling. DLSS, which is supposed to improve performance, is all over the place. The quality mode causes noticeable lag and stutter. Balanced mode is slightly better, but such a system demand doesn’t make sense for a largely linear game.

Bugs and glitches hurt the experience

The technical problems go beyond just low frame rates. MindsEye is filled with bugs. Enemies get stuck on walls, AI doesn’t behave properly, and it crashes on PC, especially during transitions between driving and walking. Input lag is another issue, especially when using drones or aiming weapons. The controls just don’t feel tight, and that takes a toll on a game that’s supposed to be action-heavy.

As seen in the X post above, the user shared a short clip where their NPC started stretching like Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four.

Unreal Engine performance issues show again

One of the negative reviews on Steam mentions that MindsEye has that “bad Unreal Engine feel.” That’s not just a random complaint. It’s something that’s been seen in other titles too. When developers don’t fully optimize Unreal Engine, the result is often the same: stuttering, input lag, and rough transitions. Sadly, this game seems to be a part of that same pattern.

Other: Console versions also have problems

Console players aren’t having a better time either. On the PS5 and Xbox Series S, MindsEye regularly dips below 30 FPS during action scenes like combat or vehicle chases. Xbox Series S users have been dealing with blurry graphics and overall rough visuals. Moreover, the game’s load times can stretch to nearly a minute, which breaks the flow.
