Why Does Yuji Call Himself a Cog?

In Episode 5 of Jujutsu Kaisen, we saw that Hakari started attacking Yuji as Yuji was screaming to make Hakari listen to him. In Episode 6, he allows Hakari to pummell him, refusing to dodge or counterattack, as the goal is not to defeat Hakari but to convince him to join them. Yuji, during this confrontation, says something quite unfitting of the main character: he is just a cog.
During the Shibuya Incident, Ryomen Sukuna used Yuji’s body to slaughter thousands of innocent people. The guilt of this massacre has stripped Yuji of his self-worth; he believes he is the one who killed those people. And now, he views himself as a component in the machine of Jujutsu society. That statement, as u/Tistlemoe mentioned on Reddit, is a mechanism of self-punishment and coping.
Yuuji’s cog mentality
byu/Tistlemoe inJujutsushi
By reducing himself to a tool, Yuji is not even thinking of himself as human anymore. A cog simply functions. Yuji believes that his only remaining purpose is to continue exorcising curses until he breaks or is replaced. If he can fulfill this function, he can justify his continued survival.
Otherwise, he is better off dead. This makes sense because even in the first episode of Season 3, Yuji was thinking of nothing other than killing curses. He wasn’t even aware of the culling game.
How Hakari’s Fever Responded To Yuji

Kinji Hakari is driven by “fever”, which is something he uses to describe passion and the thrill of gambling. Hakari despises boredom and predictability. When Yuji first claims to be a cog, Hakari is visibly disgusted.
He beats Yuji harder, trying to break this resolve or force a genuine reaction. However, sticking to the goal of recruiting Hakari for the Culling Game, Yuji continues to stand up after every devastating blow. And that makes Hakari’s fever return.
While Yuji claims to be an unfeeling cog, his actions display a terrifying level of intensity. This realization is what finally convinces Hakari to stop the fight and hear him out. He acknowledges that despite their opposing views, Yuji possesses the “fever”.
