John Wick director Chad Stahelski explained why they will never make a live-action John Wick prequel. Stahelski has been part of the blockbuster action franchise’s creative team since 2014. The first installment served as its feature-length directorial debut, after working as a stuntman for a long time.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter,, Stahelski opened up about their decision to make an animated John Wick prequel, instead of a live-action adaptation. The filmmaker revealed that he and lead star Keanu Reeves both agreed that the prequel story would be more effective in an anime medium. «Keanu and I are not interested in going backwards,” He said. “With the anime, you don’t have to de-age, you don’t have to explain weird stuff, you don’t have to add a backstory. You accept anime in its own language without explanations. Anime just goes pop.»
The development of the animated John Wick prequel movie was first announced in October 2024 by Lionsgate. During the beginning of the franchise, it was previously revealed that John was able to retire and settle down with his wife, after completing a deal with Russian crime lord Viggo Tarasov. The prequel’s story is expected to chronicle this “impossible task” that John Wick had to do in order to buy his freedom from the High Table. The project is being directed by Shannon Tindle from a screenplay written by Vanessa Taylor. Reeves is also slated to reprise his iconic role in the prequel.
According to Stahelski, the animated movie will be crazier than previous installments. «John’s impossible task that allowed him to retire from married life,» Stahelski shared. «You’re pretty right on, but it’s animated fun. It’s meant to be fun. Some of the prequels and sequels that you see in other franchises, we’re not meant to be built that way. We just want to have fun. We want to have fun with the Wick world, but we’ve already capped it on one end [with John Wick: Chapter 4], so let’s go back and use a different medium…We can be a little bit more crazy and nutty in the anime.»
