When we think of Robert Downey Jr, the first thing that comes to mind is Iron Man. For years, RDJ has successfully led the Marvel Cinematic Universe into glory with his portrayal of the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, but if you look closely, there’s a pattern.

Yes, Downey’s solo films have been a treat to watch, too, most of the time. But it’s in ensemble settings that Downey truly elevates his own performance, as well as those around him.

Whether it’s as Iron Man in the MCU, Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder (2008), or Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer, RDJ continues to deliver layered, memorable work when surrounded by co-stars who push his range.

As someone who thrives on quick wit, improvisation, and chemistry, Downey has room to bounce off his colleagues in ensembles, something which cannot be accomplished in a solo film.

Take the MCU, for example. Chris Evans was a solid support for Downey to work his magic on and bounce his one-liners off. In Zodiac (2007), his character is grounded by those around him. His absurd character in Tropic Thunder works only because he is surrounded by equally absurd characters.

Lastly, Oppenheimer (2023) has some of this generation’s best actors, but the way Downey’s portrayal of Strauss was singled out by critics proves that he doesn’t have to lead an ensemble to shine; his presence is simply enough to turn heads.

Not that RDJ doesn’t have the ability to command a film with his screen presence alone, but there’s a noticeable difference in how dynamic his performances become when he’s part of a larger ecosystem. With his trademark wit, charisma, and flair to stand out in a crowd, he was made for ensemble roles.

We will soon see him at his best, once again, in Avengers: Doomsday. Here’s what we know about the film!

5 Times Robert Downey Jr. Shined as a Supporting Actor

Robert Downey Jr does not need to lead a film to shine bright, perhaps even brighter than the man at the front of the line. Here are 5 films where Downey stole the spotlight, despite being a supporting actor, including Spider-Man: Homecoming.

1 Oppenheimer (2023)

Why RDJ Works Better in Ensembles Than Solo Films 1

RDJ won Best Supporting Actor at the 96th Academy Awards. What more can we say about why Oppenheimer deserves a spot on the list?

The film follows the story of the Father of the Atomic Bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, during the Manhattan Project. RDJ plays Lewis Strauss, the AEC Chairman who grows to resent Oppenheimer and orchestrates a private security hearing concerning his Q clearance, hell-bent on destroying the man’s reputation.

While Cillian Murphy is the heart and soul of the Oscar-winning film, Downey does not fail at stealing the spotlight whenever he is on screen. The film made $976,757,255 at the box office, despite being in competition with Barbie.

Where to watch: Rent/buy on Prime Video.

2 Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Why RDJ Works Better in Ensembles Than Solo Films 2

While this was Tom Holland‘s first solo run for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Downey became the most talked-about element of the film.

Spider-Man: Homecoming follows the story of a high-school-going Peter Parker who finds himself stuck between trying to live a normal life and saving the world. As he tries to overpower the Vulture, RDJ stands by his side as a mentor, not fighting his battle for him, but helping him find the superhero within him.

Despite the limited screen time, his presence looms over the film as he reminds Peter that there will always be consequences to his actions. The film made $878,852,749 at the box office.

Where to watch: Disney+

3 Chef (2014)

Why RDJ Works Better in Ensembles Than Solo Films 3

Downey only has a few minutes of screen time in Jon Favreau‘s Chef, but he somehow still manages to have one of the most memorable scenes in the entire film.

Chef follows the story of Carl Casper, who quits his well-paying job after a meltdown to start his own food truck business.

RDJ played the role of Marvin, the outlandish new husband of Inez. Not only does he help Favreau’s Carl get a food truck, but he also helps him reclaim his passion for the art and connect with his son. Chef made $46,829,309 at the box office.

Where to watch: Roku. You can also rent/buy it on Prime Video.

4 Zodiac (2007)

Why RDJ Works Better in Ensembles Than Solo Films 4

The film is based on the true story of San Francisco’s Zodiac Killer and the hunt to put an end to his terror once and for all. Zodiac follows Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Robert Graysmith, who becomes obsessed with the case.

Downey plays the lead crime reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, Paul Avery. Despite his brilliance, the case ends up turning his life upside down as he embarks on a self-destructive journey. He even receives a letter threatening his life, and the paranoia of it all leads him to drugs and alcohol. He eventually moved to the Sacramento Bee in 1976.

The actor perfectly portrayed the tragedy of the case and how it affected those around it. Zodiac made $83,027,938 at the box office.

Where to watch: Netflix

5 Natural Born Killers (1994)

Why RDJ Works Better in Ensembles Than Solo Films 5

Last but certainly not least, Natural Born Killers features two victims of traumatic childhoods who become media sensations and mass murderers. The killers are elevated to cult-hero status thanks to Downey’s Wayne Gale, a self-serving tabloid journalist.

His story ends after the murderers – Mickey and Mallory – give him their final interview before he is shot to death. His descent from a professional to a gun-holding maniac has got to be one of the best parts of the film.

Natural Born Killers made $50,283,563 at the box office.

Where to watch: Rent/buy on Prime Video.

So, there you go. Whether RDJ is leading an ensemble or is a small part of it, he knows how to steal the scene, and no one can stop him. Share your thoughts on the list in the comments section below!
