The emotional ending to Shrinking Season 3 has fans wondering an all-important question: will there be a Shrinking Season 4? Thankfully, showrunner and creator Bill Lawrence had a very positive update about the binge-worthy show’s future.
Much like Lawrence’s other shows – including Ted Lasso and Scrubs – Shrinking delivers a hearty dose of comedy and drama, as psychiatrist Jimmy (Jason Segel) tries to work through the death of his wife while working in a practice with other therapists. And while it’s one of the best shows on Apple TV+, Season 3 ends in a way that could quite easily be the series finale, as Jimmy finally learns to embrace his future and takes the plunge to go on a new journey.
Harrison Ford’s Paul encourages him to stop staying rooted in the past, telling him “Either stay stuck, or go make some new scars.” In the episode’s closing moments, Jimmy attempts to rekindle things with Sofi (Cobie Smulders) and it seems like that romantic door is still open.
But although Jimmy’s main arc on the show has finally come full-circle, showrunner Bill Lawrence had a very positive update about Shrinking Season 4.
Will there be a Shrinking Season 4?
Yes, there is going to be a Shrinking Season 4 on Apple TV+. It was renewed shortly before Season 3 was released. Lawrence broke down the future of the show when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, explaining that the streamer was keen to continue telling Jimmy’s story while they were coming up with the third season.
“We were in the middle of writing Season 3. We knew Apple was into us continuing on, so we talked to the cast: ‘Guys, are you interested in doing this still?'” Lawrence recalled. “And then, ‘Are we all interested in doing it still?’ Then we had to talk a little and asked ourselves, ‘Is there a new story to tell?'”
But while Shrinking Season 4 is officially in the works, don’t expect it to retread Jimmy’s story so far, as Lawrence says it’ll continue to explore his life after he’s gotten over his wife’s death. “If we started with Jason hearing a song and getting teary and reminiscing about his wife, you would go, ‘I thought in the last three seasons this already happened? I thought he got through this?'” he joked.

Although the showrunner didn’t reveal specifics, he confirmed that the entire cast will return, and teased that Jimmy will still be the focus that Shrinking Season 4: “I hope that people will dig it that when we come back, whether there’s a time jump or not, that they’ll feel like we’re telling a completely different story.”
Lawrence did tease that Jimmy’s story in Season 4 will revolve around “what that means to rebuild a life and be who he is,” before adding that he’s “figuring out the arcs for the next two seasons,” with the writers.
