Will Trent owes a debt to Rafael in Season 3 because the latter saved the former’s life from a criminal when they were teenagers.

Will Trent Season 3 Episode 14 brings Will and Rafael’s shared past front and center. In the present, Rafael’s grandmother passes away, leading to Will and Rafael reuniting. The former then attempts to stop the latter’s criminal operations.

The flashbacks then reveal that Will grew up alongside Rafael when the latter’s grandmother took the former in. The two develop a brotherly bond and eventually came across a criminal empire. They then joined forces to steal rugs from a truck and sell it for huge amounts of money. However, they were cornered by the thief they stole the rugs from and ended up working for him.

Along the way, Will learns that someone within Rafael’s criminal gang’s ranks planned to betray and kill him and steal the latter’s $4 million, as that person was unhappy with Rafael’s takeover of a rival gang’s territory.

Rafael lets Will arrest him, but due to possessing information on other criminals, Rafael cuts a deal with the FBI, wherein they ensure his and his daughter’s safety and relocates them elsewhere.
