WinRAR releases new update and says it’s thanks to people finally paying

WinRAR

For decades, WinRAR has been one of the internet’s longest-running jokes. Despite constantly reminding users that its free trial had expired, the file compression tool continued to work without locking people out, leading millions to use it for years without ever buying a license.

Now, the company is leaning into that reputation after announcing WinRAR 7.23, and the software says the latest update was only possible because people had finally started paying for it.

WinRAR pokes fun at its legendary unpaid users after 7.23 release

On June 30, WinRAR announced the release of version 7.23 on X, thanking customers with a tongue in cheek message.

“Thanks to all of your recent payments, we’ve been able to develop a new version! WinRAR has just released the new, shiny, version 7.23!”

The joke quickly resonated with users, as WinRAR has become famous for allowing people to keep using the software long after its 40-day trial technically expires. Unlike many paid programs, the application continues to function with only a recurring reminder encouraging users to purchase a license.

The post prompted thousands of replies, with many continuing the running gag.

Another joked, “How much [money is] needed for 7.24?” WinRAR replied with a GIF of Dr. Evil saying, “One Million Dollars.”

When someone asked whether the company would “hold a party if someone buys the WinRAR,” WinRAR responded: “Yes, of course!”

The company also confirmed that an automatic “Check for updates” feature is “in the pipeline” after a user requested it, while another reply revealed that support for 32 bit Windows systems ended with version 7.01.

Others asked about discounts, merchandise, and platform support, with WinRAR confirming that discounts are always available and reminding one user that the software is only available on Windows.

Version 7.23 includes a series of bug fixes and improvements, although the release has attracted almost as much attention for the company’s social media humor as the update itself. After decades of internet memes about never paying for WinRAR, the developer appears more than happy to join in.
