Ahead of the release of the highly-awaited adaptation of Emily Brontë’s novel, Wuthering Heights, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, it has found itself in another controversy.
While talking to Vogue, the costume designer Jacqueline Durran revealed that the film will not be historically accurate in terms of its costumes. Although the film is set in late 18th-century England, the designer revealed that they aren’t simply showcasing a single moment in time.
Our dates are all confused in the sense that we’re not representing a moment in time at all – we’re just picking images or styles that we like for each character. Heathcliff has always been a sort of Georgian-era hero, and we thought that really worked for Jacob.
Well, that is quite a problem for people who would prefer to see their favorite novel’s adaptation without a character wearing sunglasses or holding Chanel bags.
Being a magnum opus of a movie (since there’s much hype about it), fans and haters are observing the film closely. Naturally, this isn’t the first time that Wuthering Heights has found itself in controversy.
This Isn’t the First Time Wuthering Heights Has Created Controversy

It was during the production of the film that Jacob Elordi had been cast in the role of Heathcliff. The only problem with that casting was that Heathcliff had been described as “dark-skinned gipsy” by Emily Brontë in her novel.
Naturally, with Elordi being a white actor, the film had received backlash for allegedly trying to whitewash a beloved role in a classic novel that seemed to be irreplaceable (via Telegraph).
Although the backlash subsided over time, it seems that the movie will not be getting any rest for a while until it is released. Despite the controversies, there is a strong contention amongst fans that Wuthering Heights might just turn out to be a surprise success.
Why Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights Might Be a Surprise Success

Well, Wuthering Heights is bringing along a possible new trend that fans and Hollywood might like to follow in the distant future. There’s no doubt that the film is being carried by lead stars Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie; however, there’s a core story that needs to be told with this film.
The timeless costumes and the out-of-place moments could potentially bring out a trend in Hollywood where older books can get adapted into modern movies with newer looks and out-of-place costumes.
Naturally, Wuthering Heights could turn out to be a surprise success that audiences might actually love to watch.
