Cena returns to SmackDown for the first time in weeks to confront Orton and the crowd, continuing the march to his retirement in December, where he vows to leave WWE as the last real champion.
In addition, a major tag team match that features LA Knight and Damian Priest teaming up against Solo Sikoa and WWE United States Champion Jacob Fatu ahead of the fatal four-way match for Fatu’s title that includes Drew McIntyre. Jade Cargill and Nia Jax face off to determine the number one contender for Tiffany Stratton’s WWE Women’s Championship, and Aleister Black faces off against Carmelo Hayes.

Your WWE Friday Night SmackDown Key Moments For May 9, 2025
- LA Knight and Damian Priest’s stable truce was fractured fully after their win against Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu. Sikoa ate the pin from Knight, keeping Fatu looking strong and powerful. At the end of the match, Drew McIntyre appeared and hit Fatu with a Claymore Kick out of nowhere.
- Chelsea Green and the Secret Hervice are having a prayer circle in General Manager Nick Aldis’ office to mourn the loss of her Women’s United States Championship. Current champion Zelina Vega appears, and Aldis sets a match between Green and Piper Niven against Vega and a mystery partner, revealed to be Alexa Bliss.
- Charlotte Flair returns to SmackDown for the first time since WrestleMania 41. She states that she’s looking to make her way back to the Women’s Championship, and as the crowd boos her, she scolds them and asks them why they’re disrespecting her, the greatest of all time. As the crowd continues, she throws the mic down and leaves the ring, and as she leaves, she has a stare-down with Jade Cargill. Cargill tells Flair that she’s had her chance and that she needs to head to the back of the line.
- ing their loss to Rey Fenix and Andrade, Santos Escobar verbally accosts Lod Garza, leading to additional tension between Berto and Escobar, with Angel Garza trying to keep the peace.
- John Cena returns to the ring and says that tomorrow, «your childhood dies» at Backlash. Cena says that Orton is the best at wasting his potential and doing the bare minimum.
Alexa Bliss Returns To SmackDown (Finally)
A Much-Needed Return For The Women's Division
One of the most welcomed and celebrated women on the roster triumphantly returns to WWE programming, as Alexa Bliss tags with Zelina Vega in her first WWE match since this year’s Royal Rumble match. Bliss, a former multi-time Women’s Champion, has consistently been both a fan favorite and the topic of conversation among wrestling fans about why she hasn’t returned yet.
Whatever the reason for Bliss’ absence on WWE programming was, her return was loudly greeted by the live crowd, and her return injected another competitor back into the division to shake up both title pictures. With her backstage confrontation with. Charlotte Flair adding additional mystery, as well as the Wyatt Sicks still somewhere in the wings, Bliss’ return is a welcome one, and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s next.
Aleister Black Continues To Look Strong

Another week, another big win for Aleister Black, his second match back with WWE since returning last week. The presentation is still magic, utilizing every aspect of his old NXT entrance and letting this new version of the character shine, with an incredible video promo before the match began.
With another win under his belt, Black appears to be positioned in a powerful way under the Triple H regime, back to right wrongs that were made when he was abruptly released four years ago. With the United States Championship picture heating up, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Black make his way into the picture post-Backlash.
