Kane Parsons’ Backrooms has added another major milestone to its historic box office run, becoming A24’s highest-grossing movie ever in North America.

The film officially took the record on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after reaching a domestic total of $97.7 million, surpassing Marty Supreme, which previously held the title with $96 million. The Timothée Chalamet-led film was also A24’s most expensive production to date.

Backrooms is expected to cross the $100 million domestic mark on Wednesday, less than two weeks after its release.

Backrooms continues strong run after record-breaking debut

The achievement comes just days after the film delivered A24’s biggest opening weekend ever with $81.4 million. The success also made 20-year-old Parsons the youngest filmmaker in history to top the domestic box office.

The film has continued to perform strongly during the week following its debut, earning $7.6 million on Monday and another $8.6 million on Tuesday.

Parsons first launched Backrooms as a series of viral YouTube Shorts, building a large online audience before adapting the popular online concept into a feature film. He also retains the rights to the intellectual property.

The movie has found particular success with younger audiences. According to audience data from its opening weekend, half of ticket buyers were under the age of 25, while 75% were under 35.

Backrooms was produced by Chernin Entertainment, which co-financed the project alongside Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and 21 Laps. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a failed architect who discovers an endless maze of rooms inside the furniture store he manages, while Renate Reinsve plays his therapist.

Parsons’ success comes amid a broader wave of creator-led films finding audiences in theaters. Just two weeks earlier, fellow YouTuber Curry Barker scored a surprise hit with Obsession, which became the first movie since 1982’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to see its second and third weekends increase rather than decline.
