A Luffy statue in Japan has remained standing after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit the country, with a local One Piece fan confirming the landmark escaped damage despite ongoing aftershocks.
The earthquake struck Kumamoto on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu on July 28, causing significant damage across the prefecture and disrupting transport services as repeated aftershocks continued throughout the day.
One of the prefecture’s best-known landmarks is a bronze statue of Monkey D. Luffy, which sits outside Kumamoto Prefectural Office. However, following the latest earthquake, one local reassured fans that the statue had escaped damage.

“The Luffy statue is safe. We’re still experiencing repeated jolts coming up from below. This time, it seems the areas around Uki, Hikawa, and Yatsushiro in Kumamoto have suffered the most damage,” reads the translated post.
The post also reflected on how the latest disaster has brought back memories of the 2016 earthquakes, which devastated Kumamoto and claimed more than 270 lives.
“Ten years have passed, and I had completely let my guard down. Luffy, who wasn’t here back then, has become a symbol of hope. I just hope this all comes to an end soon.”
The post has since drawn responses from One Piece fans around the world, with commenters offering messages of support.

Luffy’s bronze statue was installed in 2018 as part of the One Piece Kumamoto Revival Project, which was created with Kumamoto native and One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda.
