Pokemon has assembled eight winners from some of the world’s strangest competitions for a one-off Pokemon Champions tournament in London.

The Pokemon Champion of Champions event began at 2pm BST on July 29, equivalent to 9am ET and 6am PT, with the action broadcast through Pokemon’s official English-language Twitch and YouTube channels.

Its winner will receive a trip to the 2027 Pokemon World Championships, while a donation will be made in their name to a charity of their choice.

All eight competitors were coached by Ray Rizzo, who won three consecutive Pokemon VGC World Championships in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Rather than facing professional Pokemon players, Rizzo’s team consists of champions in everything from eating stinging plants to sitting completely still.

They are competing in Pokemon Champions, the free-to-start battle game released for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

Pokemon’s champions have some unusual credentials

Representing the UK is Mike Hobbs, a three-time World Stinging Nettle Eating Champion from Dorset. Contestants are given nettles cut into two-foot lengths and one hour to remove and eat as many leaves as possible, with their stripped stalks measured at the end.

Hobbs ate 74 feet of nettles to win the men’s competition in 2025 before successfully defending his title in 2026.

Italy’s Nicola Matarazzo is a pizza acrobatics champion, but the title has little to do with making the tastiest pizza. He won the freestyle category at the 2026 World Pizza Championship in Parma by spinning, throwing, and performing tricks with pizza dough to music.

Matarazzo finished with 485 points, beating the runner-up by a single point.

French fry champion Aurèle Mestré previously worked as an engineer before leaving the industrial sector and opening Friterie Mestré in Lille in 2022. He won the authentic fries category at the inaugural French Fry World Championship the following year, using thick-cut potatoes cooked first in sunflower oil and then finished in beef fat.

Leandro “Apollo” Silva brings more traditional combat experience to the roster. The Brazilian MMA veteran previously competed in the UFC before becoming the 2025 Pillow Fight Championship men’s winner, defeating three opponents during the tournament.

PFC describes itself as a combat sport using specialized pillows rather than a casual pillow fight.

Denis Kwan Hong-Wang earned his place by becoming Hong Kong’s 2024 Space-Out champion. Around 100 entrants were required to sit on yoga mats for 90 minutes without using their phones, making significant movements, falling asleep, or creating noise. Heart rates were checked every 15 minutes, with the calmest finalist eventually winning.

Kwan Hong-Wang works as an educational psychologist when he is not competitively doing nothing.

Ayna Ziordia Botella began whistling at five years old and won the all-around and live-band categories at the 2023 Masters of Whistling competition in Hollywood. Her skills have also appeared on the big screen, with Ziordia performing as a whistler and dubbing artist for the Oscar-nominated animated movie Robot Dreams.

Germany’s Nele Nöhrbaß is a two-time national hobby horsing champion, winning titles in 2024 and 2026. The 21-year-old is also a trainer for Germany’s national hobby horsing team. Competitions involve athletes completing jumping and dressage-inspired routines with stick horses while being judged on their timing, technique, posture, and control.

Completing the roster is Zachary “Ichabod Fame” Knowles, who won the 2024 Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu, Finland. The Canadian teacher, bassist, actor, and burlesque performer claimed the title with a routine that included Nickelback’s “Photograph,” despite performing without an actual instrument.

Although its disciplines are deliberately unconventional, every member of the roster arrives with an established competitive title. Champion of Champions will determine which of them can turn those unusual skills into success in a Pokemon battle.
