Rockstar Games is making it easier for Grand Theft Auto 5 players to jump to the latest version of the game, announcing free upgrades across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC ahead of GTA Online’s next major update.
The announcement was made as part of Rockstar’s reveal for The Kortz Center Heist, a new GTA Online update arriving in July that will see players target a prestigious Los Santos art gallery in a multi-stage robbery.
While details about the upcoming heist were the headline attraction, Rockstar also confirmed that millions of players will soon be able to upgrade their copies of GTA 5 at no additional cost.
Rockstar is offering free GTA 5 upgrades across PlayStation, Xbox
Beginning June 18, anyone who owns a PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V or the digital Xbox One version of the game will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S editions for free.
The upgraded versions include technical improvements, support for migrating Story Mode and GTA Online progress, and access to additional features such as Hao’s Special Works vehicles and upgrades, as well as Career Progress rewards.

Xbox
PC players are also getting access to Rockstar’s latest improvements at no cost. Anyone still playing the Legacy version of GTA 5 on PC can upgrade to the Enhanced Edition for free, gaining access to features such as ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination.
Reactions to the free upgrade news have been mixed, with many excited for the generous offer. Those who have paid for it already, however, aren’t as happy.
“What about all the people that paid for it?” one person asked.
Another mentioned: “After I paid $20 for the UPGRADE??”
Rockstar also announced that GTA+ members can now access GTA 5’s Story Mode through the GTA+ Games Library alongside GTA Online.
The free upgrades arrive just weeks before The Kortz Center Heist launches in July. The update will introduce a new Mansion property upgrade called the Art Studio, allowing players to prepare for a major art theft operation targeting the Kortz Center, one of Los Santos’ most recognizable cultural landmarks.
