The early access build of Subnautica 2 has plenty of Biomods on offer, and we can use them to improve our chances of survival. Each Biomod has a unique ability that either has to be activated or works automatically as a passive.
Our guide will help you understand which are the best mods to unlock.
Complete Subnautica 2 Biomods tier list
Biomods are of two types: Active and Passive. We can have only one Active Biomod at any given time, but the same rule isn’t applicable for the Passive ones. I have used three different tiers to judge each of them based on their abilities.
- S-tier choices are pretty much the best options.
- A-tier choices are good options, but you’ll need to time their use.
- B-tier choices aren’t my favorites. They get the job done, but they’re extremely situational.
S-tier
| Name | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Dash | Dash in any direction to avoid predators or hazards | This is one of the best Biomods to equip, and more so because it’s free. You can use the dash to avoid enemies or just cover distances quickly. The cooldown is pretty low, adding to the benefits. |
| Sonic Echo | Emit a sonar pulse to highlight nearby resources | Finding resources in depth might not be the easiest task. Hence, knowing their locations if you’re near them is certainly beneficial. |
| Camouflage | Become invisible to predators when not moving | If you find yourself trapped, all you have to do is just stay calm. However, you can still take damage if the predator accidentally hits you. |
| Homing Sense | Detect nearby bases with electrical power | Great at finding out nearby bases if they have their power source active. |
| Dermal Garden | Slowly grow nutritious algae on your skin | This is a useful way to manage your hunger in desperate situations. I also don’t like to cook, which is partly why I find this Biomod to be so beneficial. |
A-tier
| Name | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Electric Discharge | Emit an 800-volt electric shock to deter medium and large-sized predators | This charge is enough to deter any incoming predator and send them packing. However, don’t try this with the Leviathan (tried, and the results weren’t pretty). |
| Chum Cloud | Release a cloud of delicious bait to distract predators | This is a good alternative to Electric Discharge, and it allows you to get away when you’re being chased by a predator. |
| Oxygen Control | Slows oxygen consumption when not moving | Consuming less oxygen when you’re stationary is useful, but you can bypass its advantages by using a bigger Oxygen tank. |
| Bioluminiscence | Glow in the dark | This is beneficial if you love to explore at night and don’t want to carry the Flashlight in your inventory. |
| Threat Sense | Detect nearby threats with specialised hair cells | There are ample numbers of times when a predator will be lurking around from a blind spot. Threat Sense also alerts you about hazardous environmental conditions. |
| Water Retention | Gain more water from all sources with enlarged, orca-like kidneys | Since your body will be absorbing more water from practically any source, you can pay less attention to your thirst. |
B-tier
| Biomod | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Pathfinder | Release a trail of pheromones you can follow to find your way | While the pheromones do prevent you from getting lost, their use reduces as you unlock more tools and advance in terms of technology. |
| Sea Skimmer | Swim faster when close to underwater surfaces or the seafloor | While the enhanced speed is noticeable, you can easily replace them with tools like the Wakemaker. You’ll also travel in the Tadpole once you’ve unlocked it. |
| Water Secretion | Slowly fills a water packet by filtering fresh water from the sea | Allows you to passively regenerate water, but go for Water Retention as that’s a better choice. |
The only Biomod I have yet to assess is Slow Metabolism (yet to be unlocked). The list of available options should increase during early access once the updates are dropped. I will duly update my tier list accordingly based on how the new Biomods fare compared to the existing ones.
