Interview With Julien Hummer, Creative Director for The Crew Motorfest

Julio La Pine, Senior Staff Writer at : Reaching the 10-season mark is a huge milestone for any game. How does the team feel about this, and what have been some of the most important pieces of feedback you’ve received that have influenced the design of the new content?
Julien Hummer, Creative Director for The Crew Motorfest: Reaching ten seasons is a moment of real pride for the team. It’s months of commitment, passion, and constant iteration alongside our players.
One of the strongest signals we received from the community was the desire for a more dynamic rhythm, which led us to shift from four-month seasons to a three-month rhythm. This allows us to deliver content more frequently and keep Motorfest feeling more alive!
Another key moment came from a discussion with community leaders a few months ago, who asked why we couldn’t bring narrative elements from The Crew 2 into Motorfest. That conversation directly inspired Kai’s Garage, reconnecting players with a feature they truly loved in TC2: the stories.
Our commitment to meeting our community’s expectations doesn’t stop here. We will continue to listen closely, evolve the game, and iterate with our players.
Julio: The Hawaii Grand Tour is certainly the biggest event we’ve seen in The Crew Motorfest so far. How challenging was it to design it, and would you like to explore more 1-hour time attacks in the future?
Julien: The Hawaii Grand Tour was both a creative and technical challenge and a direct response to what our players had been asking for. Since The Crew 2 long-format events have always been high on the community’s wish list, and they’re also something our teams genuinely enjoy crafting. As Motorfest’s world grew, we felt it was finally big and rich enough to support an experience of this scale. We didn’t want it to feel like just another event; it had to be a journey. That’s why we paired it with an exceptional reward, the Ferrari 250 GTO (1962). This is our first Special Event, and it opens the door to more diverse, narrative-driven challenges in the future, with different moods and ambitions!
Julio: With so many vehicles launching with every season, what is the process of deciding which ones make the cut and which ones should be left on the chopping block or saved for other seasons?
Julien: It always starts with our community. We listen closely, on Discord, Reddit, or other social media platforms, to the fantasies players would like to live or the vehicles they want us to add to the game. The car is at the heart of our creative process; everything begins with a vehicle, a brand, or a theme. From there, we build a story-driven experience, working closely with automotive partners to ensure every car is represented with care and authenticity.
Julio: While it was added last season, what was the process for getting NASCAR on board with the game, and what was the player’s feedback after experiencing this playlist?
Julien: Working with NASCAR was both an honor and a responsibility. It’s a legendary motorsport brand with a very strong culture and passionate fans. Our goal was to translate that world into Motorfest in a way that felt authentic but kept it fun and accessible. Player feedback was extremely positive, especially in the U.S., where fans appreciated our interpretation of the NASCAR experience. Receiving direct congratulations from NASCAR teams themselves was a particularly proud moment for us!
Julio: Lastly, with so many vehicles, tracks, and content in the game, has the team considered adding new racing styles but decided against it because they may not have fit the style of The Crew Motorfest? Such as futuristic hover cars like WipEout or something similar?
Julien: We’re always thinking about how to surprise our players and introduce new experiences, as we did with Radio Remote Controlled Cars, for example. However, our vision of Car Culture is about using cars through time and experiences. At the same time, we’re very careful about TCM identity and roots. Innovation must feel meaningful and coherent with the world we’re building. All I can say is that we have exciting surprises coming very soon, and trust me, the journey is far from over!
Remember that Season 10 of The Crew Motorfest launches on July 1, with a lot of content at launch, including the new Late Show playlist, the Hawaii Grand Tour, Track Forge additions, and more content, which you’ll be able to experience throughout the season.
