A VTuber has gone viral after every World Cup team she rooted for was knocked out, with fans now begging her to stop picking sides.
Essie, a VTuber who posts under essie_ch, became the center of a growing World Cup joke after fans noticed that several teams she supported in the knockout stage immediately lost.
The streak started with Brazil, who lost 2-1 to Norway, before Mexico fell 3-2 to England. Portugal then lost 1-0 to Spain, while the United States were knocked out by Belgium in a 4-1 defeat.

Messi ruins attempt to reverse VTuber World Cup curse
The curse then appeared to hit Argentina on July 7, when Essie was cheering for Messi’s side against Egypt. Egypt went 2-0 up through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, leaving Argentina on the verge of a major Round of 16 upset.
Trying to reverse the trend, Essie switched sides while Egypt was ahead. “I DONT WANT TO CURSE EGYPT BUT I WANT THEM TO WIN,” she posted, before adding: “my pure heart will reverse the curse.”
It did not work. Argentina pulled one back through Cristian Romero in the 79th minute, Messi equalized in the 83rd, and Enzo Fernandez scored the winner in stoppage time to complete a 3-2 comeback.

The timing only made the joke spread further, with fans blaming Essie’s support for Egypt’s collapse while others joked that Messi had finally beaten the curse himself. In one follow-up, Essie wrote that she had “been banned from cheering on any teams today,” before immediately adding that she was rooting for Egypt and Colombia.
