Researchers have revealed that doing around 90 minutes to two hours of weight training each week is linked to a lower risk of early death.

A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that moderate resistance training was associated with a 13% lower risk of death from any cause. Participants also recorded a 19% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 27% lower risk of death from brain and nervous system diseases.

The findings were based on data from 147,374 adults who were tracked for up to 30 years, making it one of the largest studies to examine the long-term health effects of resistance training.

Weightlifting decreases chances of early death

According to the study, people who spent roughly 90 to 119 minutes a week weight training saw the lowest risk of kicking the can early.

However, beyond two hours per week, researchers found little evidence of any additional reduction in mortality risk. So, you don’t need to go to the extremes of doing something like this full One Punch Man fitness routine to see health benefits.

The research also found the biggest benefits were among people who combined weight training with activities like running, cycling, swimming, or brisk walking.

While resistance training alone was associated with a 7% to 11% lower risk of an early death, aerobic exercise produced even larger benefits, reducing mortality risks by between 26% and 43% depending on activity levels.

Participants who regularly combined both forms of exercise had a roughly 45% lower risk of death than those who did neither.

So, if you want to increase your chances of reaching a grand old age, you may want to consider getting a gym membership or at least go for a run after consuming something like this 1,876-calorie Burger King meal.
