“Batman of Lagos” goes viral after alleged bike thieves found taped to poles by vigilante

A mysterious figure dubbed the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno” has gone viral after several alleged motorcycle thieves were found taped to poles in Jalisco, Mexico.

The incidents have been reported in Lagos de Moreno, a municipality in Jalisco, where photos began spreading online showing men restrained with tape in public areas, sometimes beside motorcycles they were accused of stealing.

Social media users quickly attached the Batman nickname to the unknown person or group, with the story spreading across X as users reacted to what many framed as vigilante justice. However, authorities in Jalisco are investigating the incidents and have said the people found tied up are being treated as victims.

According to El Financiero, Jalisco prosecutor Salvador González de los Santos confirmed there had been incidents where young men were tied up with signs warning what would happen if people continued stealing motorcycles. He said investigators were looking into the allegations against them, but stressed that “en este momento son víctimas,” meaning they are victims at this stage.

Reports from Infobae say the first known case began around June 13, when a young man was found tied to a post with signs of injuries and a cardboard sign accusing him of being a “ratero,” or thief. More cases followed on June 17 and June 19, with at least five men found under similar circumstances.

In some of the images circulating online, the men appeared with their mouths taped, faces marked, and warning signs placed nearby. Local reports said motorcycles allegedly linked to the thefts were also left at some of the scenes.

The case has exploded on social media, where English-language posts about the “Batman of Lagos” have gained thousands of likes and millions of impressions. Users have compared the anonymous figure to a comic-book vigilante, while others have warned that the situation is a sign of frustration with crime and law enforcement.

Despite the online praise, Jalisco officials are treating the acts as potential crimes rather than lawful arrests. State Security Secretary Juan Pablo Hernández said five cases had been documented, two vehicles possibly connected to the incidents had been identified, and no suspects had been detained.

Local outlets have also raised the possibility that the “Batman” may not be one person at all. Authorities are reportedly investigating whether the attacks were carried out by multiple people, leaving open the question of whether this is street-level vigilantism, an organized group, or something more coordinated.

For now, the identity of the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno” remains unknown. The people found tied up have reportedly received medical attention, while authorities continue investigating both the alleged motorcycle thefts and the assaults.
