A Chinese delivery company has fulfilled a driver’s final wish after he died while helping save a father and son from drowning.
Jin Xiaowu, a 20-year-old food delivery rider from Guizhou province in southwestern China, died on May 27 after jumping into a river to help rescue two people caught in strong currents.
According to AsiaOne, a child had fallen into the river while playing near the bank. His father then jumped in after him, but both were quickly pulled into deeper water by the current.
Jin, his colleague Wang Fangyang, and two other men nearby rushed in to help. The group managed to bring the father and son back to safety, but Jin became exhausted during the rescue and was swept away by the water. Firefighters later recovered his body that night.
Delivery driver honored dying after saving family
After Jin’s death, his story spread across Chinese social media, with many praising his bravery and mourning the loss of the young rider.
His father, Jin Peiyin, told local media that his son was always willing to help others and would not hesitate if someone was in danger. With tears in his eyes, he added: “But I miss him so much.”
Jin’s sister also shared an emotional post online, writing: “The closer I get to home, the further you seem to be from me.”
According to SCMP, Jin had hoped to save 20,000 yuan, about $3,000, to buy his father a vehicle. He had also reportedly sent photos of minivans to a friend while talking about the plan.
After learning about his wish, delivery giant Meituan reportedly gave the family 100,000 yuan, about $15,000, in consolation money before buying them a car one day before Father’s Day in China.

The company also reportedly promised to continue supporting Jin’s family.

Jin and the other rescuers were nominated for bravery awards by local officials, while villagers gathered for an emotional farewell at his burial.
This isn’t the first time a delivery driver has gone viral for saving someone. Earlier this year, an Amazon delivery driver was credited with helping save an 84-year-old woman from a house fire after spotting flames outside her home and calling 911.
Back in 2024, another Amazon driver sprang into action after a 6-year-old asked him to help his mom, who had fainted over 20 minutes earlier.
