Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is coming this year, after a decade-long wait for a sequel. Given the long wait and the entire console generation it skipped, many are hoping for a bunch of new features for this grand return.

To showcase some of these, Nintendo held a Direct just for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. Here is everything new we’ve learned about the upcoming life sim ahead of its release this year.

There's A New Way To Make Miis

In character creation — which is greatly expanded — you don’t have to create a Mii from scratch anymore (or rely on a picture of someone, which was always a bit dodgy).

Instead, you can answer questions about their appearance and get a Mii that way.

Miis Can Be Queer And Non-Binary

FINALLY — our Miis can be gay as hell. As well as selecting which gender our Mii is into romantically, they can also be non-binary.

You choose all of these in the character creator. As well as being far more inclusive, it means we can influence who our Miis hook up with, rather than it being more random like in the original.

You Can Force The Miis To Meet One Another And Interact With The World

It’s as simple as picking them and placing them near someone else, or an activity on the island.

This means we don’t have to wait around for our Miis to do something. Instead, we can force them to go and make friends, or do something for our amusement.

There's An Extensive Photo Mode

In a dedicated building, you can have photoshoots with all of your Miis. This lets you pose the Miis how you’d like, and play around with different backgrounds.

This brings Tomodachi Life more in line with other games with photo modes, so it’ll be interesting to see how many options we have to play around with.

You Can Customise The Entire Island

We’re shown a few customisation options with the island itself, letting us control everything from the greenery, to the shape of the island itself.

This is far greater than anything else we got in the last game, or even in other Nintendo games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In fact, we see one island that, when you zoom out, is in the shape of a Mii.
