According to the official synopsis, the story is set in 2029 in a near-future Japan where massive information networks connect the planet, even as nations and political divisions continue to exist.
Just like in the original manga and 1995 film, the show revolves around Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg, who leads an elite combat unit. Motoko, alongside Batou, envisions a new task force capable of responding to emerging cyber threats before they escalate.
At the same time, Ministry of Internal Affairs officer Daisuke Aramaki has been working toward establishing a similar organization. After recruiting Kusanagi and her squad, the group begins operations as Public Security Section 9, an offensive tactical unit also known as “Shell Squad.”

The latest trailer also offered a much closer look at the anime’s visual style, which has a more rugged manga-inspired design. During the one trailer, we get to see everything from action-packed fights to an appearance from the Tachikoma, the beloved spider-like AI tanks that are as cute as they are deadly.
