McDonald’s has revealed a new restaurant design concept that could appear at remodeled locations in the future, featuring a modern glass exterior, updated dining spaces, digital ordering features, and a revamped playplace.

The concept was unveiled during McDonald’s Worldwide 2026, where attendees got a first look at the prototype as part of the company’s broader NEXT initiative, a new strategy introduced by Chairman and CEO Chris Kempczinski.

Photos shared online by franchisee-focused account McFranchisee quickly gained attention, with many fans focusing on the restaurant’s appearance rather than the event’s other announcements.

The redesign features floor-to-ceiling glass walls, expanded seating areas, self-service pickup stations, outdoor dining space, and a large enclosed playplace visible from the main dining room. The concept also incorporates modern lighting and updated versions of McDonald’s signature yellow branding throughout the restaurant.

The unveiling comes as McDonald’s looks to adapt to changing customer expectations and increasing competition across the fast food industry.

In a message sent to the McDonald’s system, Kempczinski said the company is entering its next phase of growth while remaining focused on the principles established by founder Ray Kroc.

“The competitive landscape is changing and with it, customers’ expectations,” Kempczinski wrote.

“We can’t ask our customers to choose. Hospitality or speed. Great taste or convenience. Value or quality. They want what Ray called the total of everything.”

New design could appear at future remodeled restaurants

While McDonald’s has not announced a timeline for a wider rollout, the design was presented as an option that restaurants may be able to adopt during future remodel projects.

One of the most notable features is the return of a prominent playplace, which occupies its own enclosed section of the building. The structure is visible through bright red glass walls and sits alongside the main dining area.

The restaurant also emphasizes digital ordering and pickup capabilities while maintaining larger dine-in spaces, reflecting McDonald’s continued investment in both convenience and in-person experiences.

“Our ambition is simple: Be our customers’ first choice. Every time,” Kempczinski said.

As part of that strategy, the newly unveiled concept offers a glimpse at how future McDonald’s locations could look as franchisees update restaurants in the years ahead.

Just after the new restaurant design reveal, McDonald’s has announced a limited-edition FIFA collaboration that includes collector’s cups and a special Happy Meal.
