A team in Spain reportedly made a bet on Kalshi predicting their own relegation from La Liga, but they managed to stay up.
Sports betting has always been hugely popular, but with the rise of platforms like Kalshi, more and more wagers are being placed on very specific outcomes of sporting events.
One La Liga side saw a chance to hedge their bets, as it were, thanks to Kalshi, by betting on themselves to get relegated.
Osasuna suspected to have bet on themselves to go down
In an article from Semafor, it is stated that the owners of a top-flight Spanish side sitting just above the relegation zone going into the final days of the season decided to make a multimillion-dollar bet on Kalshi that they would indeed go down.
It was seen as something of a win-win situation: stay up and all is well, or go down and win millions of dollars to counteract the cost of relegation.
While it is not known for sure which team made this bet, it is believed Osasuna were the team involved, given their status as a La Liga team was very much in the balance going into the final day of the 2025/26 campaign.
In the end, Osasuna lost their last game 1-0 but it was a small enough defeat to keep them in the league.

That result was also enough to bring in over $1 million for trading firm Susquehanna, who were on the other side of the Spanish team’s gamble.
This news comes hot on the heels of another Kalshi success story, where a New York bar owner offered free drinks if the Knicks won, while also earning $8,000 from the prediction market thanks to that result, which helped cover the cost of the open bar tab.
