A new Spyro game entitled Spyro: A Realm Beyond has been announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, complete with an announcement trailer.
Spyro, the beloved platforming game featuring the cute purple dragon, began as a Playstation exclusive back in the late 1990s. The latest release in the franchise was back in 2018, with the remastered versions of the original trilogy releasing on PS4 and Xbox One.
However, Activision presented a trailer at the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase that served as an announcement of a brand new instalment in the franchise.
Platforms and story details
Xbox UK shared some more plot details in a video on X: “When Spyro finds himself stranded, his journey to discover a way home is interupted by the arrival of a viscious invading force known as The Scavs. Spyro must make new allies and rise to protect his realm, before it’s changed forever.”
The trailer, comprising a cinematic CGI sequence sees the cute creatures of Spyro fleeing a darkness approaching the realm. The accompanying text says: “In a realm beyond, a new evil arises.” A cloaked figure presides over the dark land in front of them, wielding a menacing-looking magical staff.
The trailer then cuts to the titular character, Spyro, running across a desert, and then taking flight in the skies, while the text reads: “A legendary hero soars.” Eventually, Spyro reaches a dark tower, fluctuating with the kind of magic akin to the staff we saw earlier.
After sharing some Alpha footage of Spyro in flight, the trailer reveals that that the game will release in Spring 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
