A voice actor who provides the voice for one of Marathon‘s playable characters has challenged negativity surrounding the game, saying those who wish for it to fail should “just stop tweeting.”
Bungie’s live service extraction shooter, which launched on March 5 to positive reviews, has struggled to attract more than a small, hardcore player base, at least on Steam, where Bungie’s Destiny 2 regularly outperforms it in concurrent players.
Bungie announced on May 21, 2026, that Destiny 2’s June 9 update, Monument of Triumph, would be its last.
Previously, discourse around Marathon had seen it compared with Highguard and Concord, both games that were surrounded by negative discourse and ultimately closed down not long after launch.
Marathon voice actor “doesn’t understand” Marathon hate
Speaking to PC Gamer, Elias Toufexis, who voices Assassin in the extraction shooter, said he “doesn’t understand” the hate aimed at Marathon or Concord, specifically regarding X/Twitter comments wishing for either game to fail.
“Critique the game? Critique my work? Totally acceptable. But there’s people that go on Twitter and post memes: ‘This is Concord 2, this is Concord 2.’ Why are you spending hours doing this… How do you hope something fails?” he told the site.

“Life is so short, man. Just stop tweeting memes under things for six hours,” he continued, adding, “People just want to hate. I don’t really understand it. It’s sad more than anything.”
Toufexis also touched on Destiny 2, saying that fans of the series who believed Marathon had resulted in the former being neglected should “speak with your wallet.”
Following Bungie’s confirmation that it would be wrapping up support of Destiny 2, Marathon was review bombed by Destiny 2 fans. In the days since, a petition calling on Bungie’s parent company, Sony, to greenlight a Destiny 3 has received more than 170,000 signatures.
