A woman from Ohio came first place in a Wendy’s mascot lookalike contest, winning herself a year’s worth of free burgers.

20 contestants took to the stage at Seaport Square in New York City, as part of a lookalike contest. The contest’s aim was to find the person who looked most like the famous mascot of fast-food restaurant Wendy’s.

The event, held between World Redhead Day and National Burger Day, saw contestants compete in a variety of different rounds. It was judged by a panel that included Wendy Thomas, founder Dave Thomas’ daughter, and the inspiration for the chain’s name and logo.

Over three rounds, contestants walked out onto the stage, showing off their resemblance to the mascot’s signature look. The competitors, comprising both men and women, were adorned with freckles, red hair, and blue sundresses.

Then, they took it in turns to read social media posts aloud, trying to keep in line with the restaurant’s playful online prescence. The remaining finalists were then invited to perform their own original Wendy’s commercials.

The winner was Jennifer, an Ohio native, who was presented with a jumbo-sized cheque marking her prize of one year’s worth of free Dave’s Single burgers.

“Winning the competition is so fun and so amazing because typically redheads weren’t celebrated back in the day,” Jennifer said. “And now, for World Redhead Day, I’m celebrating my differences and I won a prize for it.”

According to the company’s announcement, the lookalike contest was intended as “a live celebration of the people, personality, and spirit that make redheads, and Wendy’s, impossible to forget.”
